So, What Type of Acne Do I Have ?
Acne Vulgaris has several symptoms with different types of lesions. In general, there are six types of skin lesions. They are blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, nodules, and cysts:
- Blackheads: The appearance of the lesion is a dark lump on the skin. This lump comes from a blocked follicle where the upper part of the blockage has been oxidized, so that the color changes to a dark color. This is often also called open comedo.
- Whiteheads: The appearance of the lesions is similar to blackheads. However, the upper part of the blockage remains tightly closed by the skin, so it does not undergo the oxidation process. This will be seen as a lump or white spot on the surface of the skin.

- Papules: Papules are inflamed lesions. This will look red, and can be painful.
- Pustules: Pustules are inflamed lesions that contain pus. This will look white or yellow with reddish skin around it. Broken pustules can cause scarring if it is not treated properly.
- Nodules: Nodules are a form of severe acne lesions that develop under the skin. Usually, these lesions do not contain pus but are quite difficult to touch.
- Cysts: Cysts are a severe form of acne lesions. The appearance of the cyst is an inflamed lesion filled with pus. Cysts will be felt sick and require treatment from a professional medical officer to avoid severe complications.
