6 Summer Vacation Beauty Secrets Tips
Slather on the SPF
Nothing says summer beauty like a tan, but these days, many experts say there’s no such thing as a safe tan unless it comes from a bottle. So step one in your summer skin care routine should be a generous application of sunscreen. New York City–based dermatologist Jordana S. Gilman, M.D., shares these recommendations:
- Use a product with SPF 30 or higher.
- Apply at least one ounce to your entire body.
- Use a nickel-sized dollop on your face.
- Moisturizers with SPF are great if you’re headed to the office, but choose a dedicated sunscreen whenever you’re getting serious sun exposure.
Lighten up
Summer skincare requires lighter formulas for both face and body — think gels, serums, and slippery lotions instead of clingy, emollient creams. That goes for cosmetics too. Swap heavy foundations for tinted moisturizers, and opt for powder blushes and eyeshadows instead of creamy formulas that will melt right off your face, says Lina Hanson, a makeup artist and the author of Eco-Beautiful: The Ultimate Guide to Natural Beauty and Wellness. “The best thing is to keep makeup looking light and fresh for summer,” Hanson says.
Control breakouts
Summer heat and humidity can increase the skin’s production of oil and make you more prone to breakouts. Dr. Gilman recommends using a body wash containing salicylic acid or glycolic acid several times a week, and a facial cleanser with either ingredient twice a week.
To control oil-induced shine, Hanson recommends using blotting papers to absorb excess oil without removing makeup.

Fake a great glow
Can’t handle being Casper-pale? Get your tan from a can (or bottle or air brush). Just make sure you exfoliate with a non oily scrub first. Or fake that summer glow with powder bronzer and a big fluffy brush. “Just dust it where the sun would naturally hit, like the forehead, chin, cheeks and shoulders,” Hanson says.
Fight frizz
Frizz is the bane of curly-haired girls everywhere, and nothing brings out frizz like humidity. Needless to say, a hot, humid July day is not the ideal time to try to straighten your hair. To combat frizz:
- Keep an arsenal of smoothing, frizz-fighting hair products — everything from shampoo to anti humidity finishing sprays — on hand to use in and out of the shower.
- Blot wet hair gently with a towel.
- Keep your hands off your hair!
Protect your hair
Summer staples like heat, salt water, and chlorine can dry out your hair. To protect it:
- Rinse strands with fresh water before you swim (to reduce chlorine absorption) as well as after.
- Cover your hair with a hat or scarf when spending time outdoors.
- Use a hair mask or deep conditioner (look for a moisturizing ingredient like shea butter) once a week.
- Skip hot styling tools like hair dryers and flat irons.
With these tips, you’ll have a summer beauty and summer skin care routine that can take a little heat.
