How to Treat Spots and Scars

A spot is an existing pimple, inflammation or blemish. While a scar is the red mark, or similar, left by a previous infection (spot, blemish, pimple etc).

Many of the supplements, essential oils and treatments described on this page can be found in most health food stores and larger supermarkets. Each of us is different and whether or not these treatments work depends on the underlying cause of your acne. Persevere and see which works for you. Remember, you need to heal yourself on the inside too by eating foods that help alleviate acne.

How to Treat Spots

On the outside
1. Tea tree oil is the best treatment for treating spots from the outside.
  • It is a natural antibiotic and antibacterial, and has a drying effect on the skin.
  • It has been shown to be as good as the chemical treatments available over the counter at the chemist.
  • Dab it on neat (undiluted) to individual spots with a cotton bud.
  • Try and use the tea tree oil on the spots as soon as they appear to speed up the healing process.

2. Other essential oils that are considered beneficial to acne are camomile, cedar wood, clove, geranium, grapefruit, juniper, lavender, palma rosa, patchouli, peppermint, tangerine.
  • Most of these need to be diluted with a mild carrier oil first.

3. Camomile tea, once cooled, makes a good daily rinse for your face.
4. Topical treatments containing zinc may also be useful.

On the inside
1. Take a herbal supplements containing burdock root, blue flag and sarsparilla.
2. You can also take echinacea, which is antibacterial.
3. Milk thistle seed has been know to help some sufferers (Read: Super seed for health benefits).
4. Drinking aloe vera juice also helps acne and cleanses the gut.
5. Make sure you eat plenty of foods with antioxidants
6. Generally, if you're eating a varied diet you won't need supplements
  • If necessary, top up with supplements of vitamin E, selenium, zinc and copper
  • You can also top up with a supplement of beta carotene
  • If you get flare ups in line with your menstrual cycle, take vitamin B6.

7. Herbal teas made from burdock, red clover and yarrow.
8. Evening primrose, flaxseed and hemp seed oils are also beneficial to the skin because they contain essential fatty acids.

How to Treat Acne Scars

  • Scars can be helped to fade faster by applying raw virgin coconut oil directly to them
  • Aloe vera juice and gels are also good both to apply topically and to drink for healing scars
  • Lavender essential oil is also known for treating scars.
  • Rosehip seed oil is great for reducing scar tissue because it is high in essential fatty acids.

Professional Treatments for Spots and Scars

1. Microdermabrasion
Exfoliation on your face and neck to remove dead cells and stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin formation. Then, using quick strokes, your therapist focuses on areas of concern such as open pores, wrinkles, blemished skin or acne scaring. 2. Bioskin Las Treatment
Treatment for acne scars (recommended for red marks and pitted skin). Involves and hand held device that sprayed micro crystals onto the skin. It was slightly uncomfortable and skin was red afterwards, but in a couple of days was visibly smoother.

3. N-Lite laser treatment breakthrough
Double blind trials show that one treatment can suppress acne for three months. The laser treatment encourages the release of chemicals that stimulate the skin's natural healing response and the production of oxygen, which is toxic to bacteria. It also improves the condition of existing scars and the skin's general texture.
